Goldwork

We count with authentic samples of goldwork art in Argentina. This occupation was one of the first to be born on earth, as a result of the varying cultures.

Goldwork is an ancient art which dates from precolumbian times in America, and it was mostly developed by indigenous communities in Mexico, Peru and Columbia. Its mentors worked with laminated gold and reproduced objects that had formerly been made in stone. Their creations had imperial and religious meanings.

Nowadays, Mexico is the American country where goldwork is most practiced, although as time went by, the use of gold decreased and they started to work mainly with silver and alpaca, which is considered to be a semi-precious metal.

The first Argentinean goldsmiths developed their occupation in colonial times. Unlike Mexico, the goldsmiths in our country work with silver and alpaca and they produce artistic and utilitarian objects. They make things like knives, buckles, mates, cutlery, gaucho’s belts, spurs, stirrups, etc.

In Mecenas Arts and Crafts we offer clear samples of this autochthonous art, which present goldwork done in wood, stones, mates and portraits. You will also appreciate exclusive pieces of jewelry in silver, alpaca with rodocrosite stone.
