Sculptures and stone crafts

We offer stone crafts which represent ancestral art in stone from northern Argentina.

In our shop you can appreciate valuable samples of sculptures with characteristic iconography of the Condorhuasi and Chavin cultures, who worked with pottery and stone crafts producing figures, pipes, mortars and axes.

The Condorhuasi engraved stone crafts around vessels and produced andromorphic figures and feline like statuettes, representations of crawling humans, and human-felines which had lengthened or double shapes. In their tombs, there have been found long necked pipes and statuettes called 'supplicants'.

The people belonging to the Chavin culture used to make pottery, bone and stone crafts. There were plenty of vessels, glasses, bottles, funeral urns and pieces of art representing anthropomorphic beings. On the vessels, for instance, they engraved religious symbols. As for the Nazcas, they represented nature and its elements in their crafts. They also sculpted felines, condors and snakes.

Rodocrosite stone or Inca’s Rose

Stone crafts made with this stone are a distinctive seal of the province of Catamarca, because on the west side of this province, in a town called Mina Capillitas, department of Andalgalá, lies the only mine in the world from which its extraction is possible. It is set at 3,200 metros upon sea level. There is another rodocrosite mine in China, but it is practically exhausted.

This beautiful stone is considered an Argentinean semi-precious national stone. Its fine color varies in the scales of pink and purples with grayish lines in between. The artisans who work with this stone produce beautiful, fine pieces of jewelry carved in varied shapes. The rodocrosite stone is relatively smooth and easily exfoliated and polished. Thus, it is not a difficult material to work with.
